Structure and Content

This advanced level degree program consists of 12 courses and may be completed in 18 months through distance education mode, as follows:

Entry Requirement

  • A Diploma in Pre-school Education-Teaching or Diploma in Montessori Method of Education (Early Childhood) or equivalent awarded by a registered/recognized provider in Singapore or other countries.
  • Other qualification and experience deemed by the Faculty Board to be equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for the above qualification.
  • Applicants entering the course who are currently not working as teachers in early childhood settings will be required to undertake professional experience placement units after the completion of the 12 core units unless they can provide documentary evidence of at least two years full-time satisfactory teaching experience in an early childhood setting. Credit for Professional experience units will be determined on a case by case basis.

 

Undergraduate courses offered by the Faculty have the following minimum English Language requirements:

 

  • A study score of at least 30 in units 3 & 4 in VCE English - ESL or at least 25 in any other units 3 & 4 VCE English units or what is judged by Faculty to be equivalent level of performance in an alternative pre-university English Subject;

OR

  • All secondary schooling completed was studied and assessed in English AND successful completion of at least two "English rich" university level subjects in an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution;

OR

  • At least two years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a tertiary institution (such as TAFE or Polytechnic) where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution;

OR

  • IELTS (academic) of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on reading and listening and at least 6.0 on writing and speaking

OR

  • Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5; or an internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on writing and speaking and 20 on listening and reading. [Note: a computer-based TOEFL score of at least 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of at least 4.5 will be accepted for entry in 2008, but it is no longer valid from 2009 onwards.]

OR

  • Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program (MUELBP) or an equivalent program, at the approriate level.

 

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English.]

Delivery Method

Each term is a 3-month period covering 2 courses of study. Each course is provided with 20 hours of academic seminars/workshop sessions (5 consecutive sessions of 4 hours each) after office hours in the evening and/or over weekends/public holidays.

Assessment Methods

Most course will be formally assessed by reports, essays and/or case studies, at the discretion of the lecturers.

Graduation and Degree

Already 13 successful intakes. Students who successfully complete the program will be awarded the prestigious Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies Degree of Monash University. Graduates will be allowed to use the title BECSt (Monash) after their name. The degree will be the same as that granted to on-campus students of the University.
