Research Program Leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Structure and Content

Subject to satisfactory external examination, the PhD is awarded by Monash University to candidates who write and submit a thesis that represents a significant contribution to knowledge or understanding of the discipline of education and which demonstrates the capacity to carry out independent research.

 

In Singapore, the Faculty of Education is able to provide supervision in 4 principal areas of research: Organisational Leadership and Management; Early Childhood Education; Maths, Science and Technology in Education; and Counselling. Successful applicants will be enrolled initially as students in the Faculty's MEd Research program. They will be assigned supervisors on enrolment as required by the University regulations. Excellent performance in the coursework units in the first two terms of the candidature, and subsequent presentation of a detailed research proposal, will confirm students' candidature in the PhD course.

External Examination

Entry Requirement

The minimum requirement for acceptance to the program is a relevant Masters degree with good grades or a four year university degree or a three year degree plus one-year graduate diploma AND average minimum grades of Credit (or B or H2B).

 

At least two years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution.

 

OR

 

IELTS (academic) of at least 6.5 with at least 6.5 on reading and listening and at least 6.0 on writing and speaking;

 

OR

 

Paper-based TOEFL score of at least 580 with a TWE of at least 4.5, or an internet-based score of at least 90 with at least 22 on writing and speaking and 20 on listening and reading.

Delivery Method

A typical term is a 3-month period. Attendance requirements will be over weekday evenings and/or over weekends.

Assessment Methods

Candidates may complete their course with a minimum of 3 years (12 terms) of study and up to 4 years (16 terms) of study. If the candidate is not able to complete the course in 3 years, an extension to Year 4 (Term 13, 14, 15 and 16) is possible with fees chargeable for each additional term.

Graduation and Degree

Candidates who successfully complete the program will be awarded the prestigious Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree of Monash University. The degree is the same as that awarded to on-campus candidates of the university. Graduates will be allowed to use the title PhD after their names.
