Structure and Content

The Master in Counselling is an innovative program in counselling that has been specially designed to fulfil the demand for counselling knowledge and skills from professional people with an interest in counselling. The program provides a professional certificate and real-life counselling expertise for people who may not be practising psychologists or social workers, but who nonetheless have a strong interest in counselling. The Master in Counselling attracts people from a variety of professions such as human resources, health, social welfare and education. Specific objectives of the program are to ensure an advanced level of knowledge about major approaches to counselling; to provide training in counselling practice and develop skills for immediate application in the workplace; and to introduce the study of ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession.

 

The Master in Counselling program consists of 6 units, which may be completed in 18 months as follows: 

 

Unit 1 EDF6530 Introduction to Counselling across the Lifespan

Unit 2 EDF6532 Assessment in Counselling

Unit 3 EDF6531 Counselling for the professions

Unit 4 EDF6533 Cognitive-behavioural Approaches to Crucial Issues in Living

Unit 5

EDF6541 Field Experience in Counselling

Unit 6 EDF6540 Ethics in Counselling

 

For applicants with previous studies in psychology and who are interested in articulating to higher degrees, a range of substitute units are also offered to extend their knowledge and skills.

 

Exit point: Students may exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Counselling after successful completion of two appropriate units.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicants must hold an approved three-year bachelors degree from a recognised University
  • Applicants with a four-year degree or a three-year degree with a minimum two years work experience in a Counselling-related field are applicable for unit exemptions (subjected to University's approval) 

 

Postgraduate courses offered by the Faculty which contain a practicum component have the following minimum English Language requirements:

 

  • At least three years of study (preferably in the five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may be required;

OR

  • IELTS (academic) of at least 7 with a score at least 7 on speaking and writing and at least 6.5 on reading and listening;

OR

  • Internet-based TOEFL of at least 100 with a score of at least 25 for writing and speaking, and at least 22 for reading and listening.

 

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English.]

Delivery Method

Each term is a 3-month period covering 1 course of study. Each unit consists of 20 contact hours and will be conducted on week 4 or week 5 of the term, from Thursday till Sunday, after office hours in the evenings and/or over the weekends/public holidays.

The "Field Experience and Practice Issues" module will conprise of 280 hours of field work, segregating into 80 hours face-to-face counselling consultation with clients and 200 hours of administrative work.

Assessment Methods

All modules are assessed by written assignments ,exams and/or a project. Counselling Practicum is organised to include direct counselling contact with clients. The practicum hours completed are validated and certified by the university.

Graduation and Degree

Graduates will be allowed to use the award title MCoun after their names. The degree conferred is exactly the SAME as those awarded to on campus students.

The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) recognised the Faculty of Education's Master in Counselling with the annual Training and Development Award at the Australian Counselling Association National Conference in Melbourne on the 14th to 16th of October. Graduates of the program will gain professional recognition from the Australian Counselling Association.
