Desmond Loh, ACCA Prize Winner

F8 – Audit and Assurance, 2nd in Singapore *

Why did you decide to sign up for the preparatory courses for ACCA at Kaplan?

I had recently graduated from one of the local polytechnics and was interested to take part in an ACCA Accelerated Pathway
Programme (AAPP) offered by ACCA. ACCA is a challenging professional qualification so I was looking for a reliable institution that could offer tuition support with best chance of success.

Together with my other polytechnic friends, we ultimately chose Kaplan because of its ACCA Platinum approved tuition provider status, global reputation and part-time schedules that fit with my other life commitments.

Please share your experiences as a student here, and how these experiences have served you well in what you are currently doing?

During lessons, Kaplan lecturers were very engaging and motivating subject leaders. While there were times when I had trouble understanding some concepts, the lecturers were very willing to explain to me patiently until I understood what they meant.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years after studying at Kaplan?

I aspire to join the auditing team of Big Four accounting firms, preferably Ernst & Young, in the near future.

What advice would you give to other Kaplan students who are studying in the same course as you did?

Firstly, you will need to be consistent and disciplined by always going through everything you learned on weekends after a week of lessons.

Secondly, you will always need to prepare for examinations early especially when you have two papers as time is not a luxury you will have.

As an ACCA Prize Winner, please share how you achieved the award and good grades?

A strong knowledge foundation is of paramount importance for F8 Audit and Assurance. So before the examinations, I took the first steps to understand the exam syllabus first to avoid surprises at the examination.

Then I prepared my own personal notes using tutor notes crafted by Kaplan lecturer. As I read through the Kaplan tutor notes, I identified vital concepts and points, and summarised it into my own personal notes. This helped to condense large quantity of information into a summarised note which I could use to revise everywhere I went.

Last but not least, I would advise anyone taking this paper to practice as many examination questions as possible. Students can also download past years’ papers from the ACCA website and invest time reading ACCA examiners’ reports and answers to these examination questions. From this exercise, I identified many crucial pointers and added them to my summarised notes.
