    P2 - Corporate Reporting, 3rd in Singapore *
F4 - Corporate and Business Law, 3rd in Singapore **

I would like to convey my most sincere gratitude to my Kaplan lecturers for imparting new skills and instilling confidence I needed to excel in my ACCA journey.

It was tough for me to understand Financial Reporting or Business Law at the beginning because I did not have strong foundation knowledge. However, my achievement today shows that it is not impossible to do well even in the face of challenges.

I believe that the key factors to my success were to attend classes regularly, pay attention to my lecturers, seek their guidance when needed and practice as many past year questions as I could.
By doing these, I was able to familiarise myself with the subjects and master them in no time.

Top ACCA Affiliate, 9th in Singapore *
After graduating from a local polytechnic, I was undecided if I should continue pursuing accounting as a career. As I needed the time to decide, I signed up for ACCA evening classes at Kaplan and took up a short work stint in finance to see if accountancy really suits me.

As lessons progressed, I started to find myself getting really interested in this career path. My teachers’ passion and dedication warmed my passion in accounting and I finally switched to full-time lessons as I continued my ACCA journey with Kaplan.

My favourite lecturer is Andy Tan, who taught me Business Analysis (P3) as well as Advanced Performance Management (P5). His lessons were very engaging and he really wanted his students to succeed.

Why did you decide to sign up for the preparatory courses for ACCA at Kaplan?

After I initially signed up for the ACCA membership, I was quite undecided on which ACCA approved learning providers to support my studies. So I came for an ACCA preview at Kaplan and was very impressed with the warm learning environment and student facilities at Kaplan.

Kaplan is my preferred choice because it is an ACCA Platinum approved tuition provider with a centrally located campus. I felt confident that their lecturers will go the extra mile to help students succeed in their studies.

Please share your experiences as a student here, and how these experiences have served you well in what you are currently doing?

I will always be grateful to my lecturers in Kaplan as they played a huge role in my ACCA journey. My lecturers often shared about their real-life insights and subject knowledge that helped a lot in my personal growth and often inspired me to think about how I could pursue an accounting career in future.

I would like to personally thank Pei Yee for her unwavering support and patience in putting abstract theories and concepts into simpler terms and improving my knowledge in the subject. Without her dedication, I would not have done so well for my F9 paper.

Can you tell us what you are working as currently? And how has the ACCA preparatory course benefited you?

I am currently an accounting assistant. By juggling between my work and ACCA evening classes at the same time, I had the great advantage of relating what I learnt in the classroom with what I do every day. This tremendously helped my career and learning progress as I had the opportunity to apply what I learnt on the job.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years after studying at Kaplan?

I hope to elevate myself to a managerial position in 5 years and make key decisions in the finance department once I achieved my ACCA qualification and accumulated sufficient working industry experience and leadership skills.

I would also like to mould myself into a well-respected leader who can bring out the best in each individual and contribute to the success of the organisation that I am working for.

What advice would you give to other Kaplan students who are studying in the same course as you did?

I personally feel that it is very important to invest in a revision after each lesson to recap topics.

This is because there are many topics covered in each module and they are often linked together in examination questions. A lack of regular revision can make it very hard for students to remember them. Without revision, it will be much more difficult to address any knowledge gaps as the course progresses.

With my disciplined weekly revision, I was always able to identify topics where I was weak in and address them before learning a new topic. And I always approached my ACCA lecturers whenever I am unclear about any topics for my paper.
Even if students are shy, they should always try to approach their Kaplan lecturers. From my experience, they really have the students' interest at heart and even marked the answers scripts from each students’ personal revision, even when they are not required to. Their feedback are vital for students to identify their weaknesses and areas for improvement.

As an ACCA Prize Winner, please share how you achieved the award and good grades?

I feel that it is challenging for most students to pass ACCA examinations as their topics are all interlinked in every subject and ACCA constantly revise their examination questions every year to ensure industry relevancy.

Based on my experience, most of these questions were often testing on students’ ability to apply concepts instead of what they can memorise and the key to success lies in constant revision with past years papers. These past year papers and technical articles were invaluable assets during my exam revisions and they are always accessible from the ACCA website.

I truly believe in this saying “Practice makes perfect” and so my successful study plan involved these three major steps.

My first step was to ensure that I understood the whole syllabus of the paper and the examination requirements. I reviewed all the Kaplan lecture notes and questions done with lecturers during classes to ensure that I understood each principles and concepts.

My second step involved practising with Kaplan examination kits and past year papers until I was able to apply my concepts with confidence without the support of any notes or materials. I also concentrated more time and efforts on my weaker topics.
My last step was to create a mock ACCA examination with past year papers. I used to run out of time before I could complete all my answers so this exercise helped me to understand more about time management.

After that, I marked my own answers with a marking scheme provided by ACCA. This allowed me to understand how well I fared under stressful examination conditions.
