Programme taken: Master of Counselling

I have been a counsellor since 2000 and for close to 20 years now, my passion for the role never diminished, as I was clear of my calling to contribute to society right from the start.

I pursued this academic journey to achieve my professional goals with a Diploma in Counselling, a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and the Master of Counselling from Monash University. After completing my Master’s Degree, I was promoted to a Consultant Counsellor with Work Health Psychologists (WHP), helping more clients resolve their issues and to get them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. In order to develop a multi-disciplinary services to my expanding clientele, I founded my own counselling firm, COUNSOL in 2015.

The Master of Counselling programme equipped me with vast amount of knowledge and skill sets that enhance my counselling therapies and interventions.

During my research for a suitable programme, I was torn between doing an MBA or the Masters in Education. I was keen to pick up a programme that would further my career in my industry of passion. The Masters of Education ticked most of my criteria. It allowed me to study on topics that were directly related to my line of work and gave me balance between research work and real-world application of that research.

The programme not only enhanced my credibility as an educator and learning specialist, but also deepened my insights into educational decision-making processes that my clients employ. This, in turn, has helped me greatly in my current role as an Assistant Solutions Director for a Regional Education Solutions Provider, where I work closely with senior managers and C-Suite level decision makers in higher educational and professional education institutes regionally.

I was a Centre Principal before deciding to study for a Bachelor’s Degree, and chose this programme to expand my knowledge to the wider aspects of Early Childhood Education. I selected Monash University because it was in the World’s Top 100 universities. The class schedules were also flexible and suited working adults like myself.

Apart from focusing on a child’s academic learning, this programme has equipped me with skills and knowledge on incorporating other aspects such as ‘Art’ and ‘Music’ into a child’s education. This is critical for Educators as it is in line with the latest Childhood Education trends that include providing children with ‘play-based’ learning opportunities. The Singapore Government has also introduced various strategies for Early Childhood Educators to be given more recognition and more parents will be able to understand the importance of an educator’s role in shaping their child’s future by building a strong foundation.
