NTU student is also pursuing ACCA certification at Kaplan Financial
Mr Clement Tan (right) is a Nanyang Technological University undergraduate.
The 22-year-old is also pursuing the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) certification at Kaplan Financial, an arm of Kaplan Learning Institute.
Kaplan Financial is a leading educational provider of professional qualifications in accountancy and finance in Singapore.
With 28 training centres around the UK and Asia, it prepares over 30,000 students a year for professional accountancy exams.
All centres have been awarded the Platinum status under the Approved Learning Partner, Student Tuition, in recognition of the quality of tuition provision for ACCA students.
“I feel that having a proficiency in accountancy is very important, especially because I intend to do investments in the future,” he said.
“If I want to set up my own business, knowing how to do my own accounting records is an important skill.”
Mr Tan enrolled in Kaplan Financial’s ACCA preparatory course in 2012, following in the footsteps of an older brother.
While his brother enrolled at a different private institute, Mr Tan was drawn to Kaplan Financial because “its location, at Somerset, is very central”.
“Not many other private institutes can boast as good a location,” he said.
“I also found many good reviews of Kaplan Financial.”
The flexibility of the course, such as allowing students to decide on how many modules to take, means that Mr Tan does not get swamped with more work than he can handle.
He attends classes once a week and has completed nine of the 14 required modules. He should get his ACCA accreditation in two years.
In the June 2013 ACCA exam, Mr Tan topped his class and placed second in Singapore for his F7 paper. His outstanding results won him a bursary from Kaplan Financial.
Mr Tan credits his results to Kaplan Financial and its lecturers, all of whom are former or current professionals in the accountancy industry.
He said: “They share with you their work experience and all the applicable theories.
“Their knowledge is relevant and they show genuine concern for us.
“Some of the lecturers showed us motivational videos, which drove me to study even harder and excel.”
