Receiving your exam results, whether it's your A-Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB), or other high-school equivalent, can be a stressful experience, especially when they don't reflect the effort you put in. If you didn't get the results you were hoping for, know that the uncertainty and frustration you're feeling right now are completely normal in a genuinely difficult moment.
But those results are a snapshot of one point in time. They are not a measure of your intelligence, your potential, or where your academic journey ends. And they are certainly not the final word on what you're capable of achieving.
This is where the concept of a grade reset comes in — and it might just change the way you think about what comes next.
It's worth remembering that a straightforward academic path is far less common than it might seem. Many successful professionals didn't start out with standout grades. Steve Jobs dropped out of college entirely, while Oprah Winfrey overcame significant personal hardship and an interrupted education before becoming one of the most influential media figures in the world. Closer to home, Singaporean entrepreneur and Grab co-founder Anthony Tan was rejected by several universities before finding his path. Many of Singapore's most respected business leaders took unconventional routes to get to where they are. And what they had in common wasn't a perfect academic record; it was the clarity to find a different route and the commitment to see it through.
Traditional examinations simply measure a specific kind of performance under a specific set of conditions on a specific day. They don't measure your curiosity, your drive, your creativity, or your ability to thrive in a real-world environment. If your A-Level results didn't go to plan, or your IB grades fell short of what certain institutions require, you are far from alone and far from out of options.
So, if you've found yourself asking "What can I do with bad A-Levels?" or quietly wondering "Can I still be successful with bad grades?", the short answer is, yes. What matters now is choosing the right pathway forward and accepting that the road to success rarely looks the same for everyone.
This is where a private Diploma can make a real difference. For students whose results have narrowed their options, a Diploma offers a structured, credible way to get back on track and, in many cases, to access opportunities they might not have otherwise considered.
That said, there's a common misconception worth addressing: that a private Diploma is somehow a lesser qualification, a fallback for students who didn't make it elsewhere. That couldn't be further from the truth.
Delivered by an EduTrust-certified institution, a Kaplan Diploma is built around the skills that today’s industries actually value. It's a rigorous qualification that has helped many students develop the academic foundation they needed to progress into Degree-level study and meaningful careers.
What makes it particularly powerful is what it represents on paper when you're ready for the next step: a fresh academic record, built entirely on your own terms, independent of whatever results came before.
While not everyone needs a formal university Degree to build a successful career, there's real value in pursuing practical skills, industry certifications, or entrepreneurial paths. Students who are driven by the goal of earning a Degree have an opportunity to do so with a private Diploma. Whether out of intellectual curiosity, career aspirations, or personal ambition, a Diploma offers a legitimate and well-recognised route into Degree-level study, without requiring you to resit your previous exams.
When you complete a Diploma, universities assessing your application for Degree entry primarily look at your Diploma results rather than your prior A-Level or IB grades. Your Diploma performance stands on its own — and that's what makes it such a practical reset.
That's true of most universities. But with Kaplan, there's an added advantage.
Eligible Kaplan Diploma graduates can progress directly into Year 21 of their chosen Degree programme at a partner University. That means you're not adding extra time to your education, you're moving through it efficiently, keeping pace with your peers and getting into the workforce to do what you want, when you want.
Successfully completing your Kaplan Diploma opens the door to over 300 private Degree programme options2 across a wide range of disciplines. The pathway looks like this:
Kaplan Diploma → Year 2 Entry into Partner University Degree → Internationally Recognised Degree Qualification
And the Degree you graduate with is the same qualification awarded to students at our partner universities' home campuses — including Murdoch University, Northumbria University, University of Portsmouth, and more.
The grades that once felt like a roadblock no longer define your university options. Your Diploma does, and now that's entirely within your control.
Choosing where to pursue your Diploma matters just as much as choosing to pursue one. At Kaplan, the focus goes beyond getting you through your coursework.
Classes are kept intentionally small, which means more direct engagement with your lecturers and a learning environment that's genuinely conducive to doing well. The curriculum is built around future growth industries, so what you're learning is relevant to where the job market is actually headed. And Kaplan's Strategic Employability Roadmap, recognised by the 2023 Singapore Business Review International Business Awards (Educational Management), means your career readiness is being developed alongside your academic progress, not as an afterthought.
The numbers reflect that approach. 9 in 10 Kaplan graduates secured employment after graduation3. More than 4 in 5 agreed that Kaplan Employability Initiatives improved their chances of securing job interviews in a relevant field4. These are the outcomes of students who chose this path and put in the work.
Kaplan Diplomas are also available in multiple study formats: full-time, part-time, and 100% online, so you can find an arrangement that fits around your life, not the other way around. If you'd like to take on a part-time job while you study, build real-world work experience alongside your qualification, or simply manage other personal commitments, the flexibility is there to make it work.
Part-time and online formats in particular are well-suited to students who want to keep one foot in the working world while they complete their studies — a combination that can make you a more well-rounded candidate by the time you graduate. And if you'd like to broaden your expertise, selected programmes offer a Double Specialisation option, giving you depth across two complementary areas within a single Diploma.
Whatever direction you're heading, there's likely a Kaplan Diploma designed for it. Our programmes span across 10 different disciplines, including:
So, whether you're drawn to business and entrepreneurship or interested in technology and data, a Diploma pathway at Kaplan is built to take you where you want to go, with a Degree programme waiting on the other side of it.
We understand that taking a different path from your peers can feel daunting, especially when the route isn't immediately obvious. To make it easier to see how the pieces fit together, here's how the journey typically unfolds for Kaplan Diploma students:
Step 1: Enrol in a Kaplan Diploma programme aligned with your interests and career goals.
Step 2: Commit to your studies and build a strong Diploma academic record that reflects your true potential.
Step 3: Progress directly into Year 21 of a Degree programme at a Kaplan partner university, based on your Diploma results.
Step 4: Graduate with an internationally recognised Degree qualification — the same award given to graduates at our partner universities' home campuses.
Step 5: Launch your career, backed by Kaplan's employability support, industry connections, and a qualification that commands genuine respect in the job market.
Each step is supported, achievable, and moves you further from that results-day moment and closer to where you actually want to be.
This road has been walked by many Kaplan students before you, students who started in the same place you're standing now and went on to graduate, find meaningful employment and financial success, and build careers they're proud of.
A disappointing set of results is frustrating, but it doesn't determine what you're capable of achieving from this point forward. Students who went on to earn good grades, strong careers, and fulfilling lives came from all kinds of starting points, and many of them took routes that looked unconventional at the time.
Bad A-Level or IB results don't close the door on a university Degree or a career worth having. A Kaplan Diploma gives you a credible, structured route to both — with the support, flexibility, and progression pathway to make it happen at a pace that works for you.

All statistics are based on the Kaplan Graduate Employment Survey 2024 conducted by Beacon Consulting Pte Ltd for graduating cohorts between January 2024 and December 2024. Respondents include full-time (FT) graduates: 412; and part-time (PT) graduates: 718. This survey is not the same survey conducted by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). The SSG Graduate Employment Survey may therefore not be directly comparable due to some differences in sample size scope between the two surveys.
