My burning passion for accounting inspired me to strive to become either a company accountant or an auditor. I intend to persevere and complete my Degree first, before pursuing professional Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Singapore Accountants (SA) qualifications. Therefore, I chose Murdoch University primarily as they are accredited by the ACCA and provide exemptions from foundation papers as well as direct entry into CPA programmes.

Having a strong interest in numbers, studying Accounting and Finance seemed like a natural choice, and Murdoch University allows me to study both Majors at once. This is a notable plus point as it allows greater specialisation and gives me a versatile education, and Murdoch University offers numerous other advantages to support my learning.

For example, its flexible study schedule allows me to plan out my studies. As a part-time student, the ability to organise my learning means that my work and study won’t conflict and I can optimise my timetable to study efficiently. I am even able to revise online through blended learning.

Throughout my studies, I have acquired work-related skills, such as QuickBooks, to provide additional value in my job. Studying is never a chore thanks to our friendly and engaging lecturers who are always available.

Murdoch University is renowned with accreditations from several well-known organisations, and I believe its affliations make it an advantageous choice for students. In addition, I advise others to study a Double Major Degree as it provides you a strong competitive advantage over those without one by empowering students to be more innovative.

Murdoch University Graduate (2021)

Having been trained in the hard sciences as a doctor, I felt that I needed to gain a business perspective of the healthcare industry as I was working as an Assistant Medical Director at the time, and later, as a Senior Manager (Operations).

Thus, I decided to pursue an MBA programme to acquire the theoretical fundamentals on running a business. The decision to pursue the programme at Murdoch University was a fruitful one, as it allowed me to function more efficiently as a healthcare administrator. The technical skills I learned through modules such as Accounting, and Business Finance allowed me to better make sense of balance sheets and profit and loss (P&L) statements, which I encounter in my course of work.

What I like most about the programme is that it gave me the flexibility to complete the modules at my own pace. Additionally, the modules were well-taught by the lecturers, who were both knowledgeable and engaging. My advice to those considering taking up a Postgraduate Degree is, do not hesitate to take up the MBA programme at Murdoch University, as it is a proven programme which will adequately arm you with the knowledge and technical skills on business administration.

Aiming for gainful and lucrative employment, I decided to switch to an IT career, which I felt would also be a fulfilling experience. With its flexible study schedule, wide range of programmes, and the option to take any number of modules per trimester, Murdoch University was the obvious choice. The flexibility alone is advantageous for part-time students like myself.

Set on acquiring an IT-related qualification, I began with a Kaplan Diploma in Information Technology as my foundation. Through its completion, I had smooth advancement to my chosen Bachelor of Science in Cyber Forensics & Information Security and Computer Science Double Major Degree.

Seeing how computer science and cyber and information security go hand in hand, I chose to study both in a Double Major programme to gain knowledge and increase my opportunities in both fields.

My efforts have paid off, and my Bachelor’s Degree education has enabled me to develop essential skills related to my work. I would recommend students take up Double Majors to increase their employability and expand their job options.

I wanted to add value to myself by learning relevant knowledge and skills, so after researching, I decided to pursue a Double Master’s Degree (Master of Business Administration and Master of Human Resources Management) with Murdoch University as it was the best choice for me.

I think the Postgraduate Degree was necessary to help me get ahead in my career. Without a doubt, it has given me an edge over my colleagues. Having the Degree is a justification to my capabilities as an individual for future career opportunities.

During the programme, I juggled work and studies by managing my time and priorities carefully. This experience helped me in many areas. My time management improved, along with my ability to prioritise. It also instilled in me a greater sense of discipline to finish my tasks within the scheduled time frames, even during difficult periods. One of the most surprising benefits is increased self-confidence, as I can look back and reflect on how I earned my masters because of the effort I had put into achieving that goal despite the many hurdles I had to overcome.

When I finally graduated, it evoked a very fulfilling sense of achievement and I am happy to have pursued the Double Master’s Degree with Murdoch, which provided me with the knowledge and support I needed.

My advice to those who are thinking of pursuing a Postgraduate Degree is this: Everyday we face changes and new demands. As the world becomes more competitive, investing in ourselves will be the best investment and you can do so by securing a Master’s Degree to develop yourself to stay competitive and relevant.

I decided to further my studies as I believe that formal education is required to understand managing a company. Through a great consultation provided by Kaplan, I chose Murdoch University as they offer a lot of learning support, and I felt more confident studying with them to achieve my educational goals.

I opted for a Double Major Degree as I believe doing so opens more career paths and would improve my job prospects. I selected the Banking and Finance specialisations as I often work with banks and other financial institutions and knowing how they operate helped me understand my clients better. Studying this Degree has introduced me to various financial concepts such as budgeting and financial analysis.

As a part-time student, Murdoch University made studying easy for me. Lessons were evenly spread across alternate weeks and I had the flexibility to choose when I wanted my lesson to be. This ensured that I could plan my work schedule in advance to avoid clashes. If I needed support, the Student Support team always responded quickly to resolve any situation.

I feel that the lecturers are professional, sharing their work experience as a reference for us on several subjects. I truly appreciate their time spent helping me on many occasions and going out of their way to answer my queries even after lessons.

Taking a Double Major Degree is what I recommend. It strongly enhances your employability potential, makes it easier to get a job after graduating and provides you a competitive advantage through showcasing your competency in two different fields.

I have recommended quite a few of my friends and colleagues to study with Murdoch. With its flexible study schedules for part-time students, experienced lecturers and recognised accreditation, I could not ask for more.

I had moved to a new role that provided me with a wider scope of work, exposure and visibility that included global and regional responsibilities, compared to my previous role with responsibilities confined to Singapore.

The programme taught me to think critically, and challenge existing ideas and implement new ones to do my job better. The programme helped me to understand the job function and make new suggestions to improve operations.

As for which aspects of the programme I liked the most, that would be the lecturers, classmates and subjects. The modules were brought to life by having good lecturers.

I had learned to juggle work and studies since pursuing the Murdoch Bachelor of Business Degree programme. The flexibility of the timetable helped me to manage schoolwork, assignments and complete tutorials. Thanks to the great experience in the Bachelor’s Degree programme, I continued on to pursue the MBA with Kaplan as well, knowing very well that the timetable and time management were within my control.

The demands of the MBA programme were tougher, but I managed to do well, with good teammates and lecturers who sincerely cared about education, learning and development.

I chose to study with Murdoch University as the programme outline matched what I was looking for to prepare myself for a sales and development management role.

As I work full-time while studying part-time, I appreciate that the curriculum is planned such that the classes are held on alternate weeks. This gives me the flexibility to balance my school, work, family and social commitments. The curriculum also emphasises learning and understanding the lectures via assignments, including post-lecture online activities to help reaffirm our understanding.

Since the lecturers have work experience in various industries, they can relate real situations at the workplace and offer live examples of how we can apply the theories, making them easier for us to understand the logic behind them.

I would recommend Murdoch to others, as the University programmes are designed to suit working adults, where it is not too overwhelming for those who need to juggle family, children and work at the same time. Additionally, there is more knowledge to gain and more friends to make through my Double Major Degree learning journey.

Murdoch University was my choice, as my siblings had attained their Degrees with the University and had a very positive experience. Furthermore, the flexible part-time programme is perfect for working adults like me, so we can manage our time and set some aside for our studies.

I decided to pursue a Double Major because having a second major in Marketing would serve as a safeguard, should I want to switch industries or careers.

The two specialisations appealed to my immense interest in Tourism and Events, as well as in Marketing. Furthermore, as Tourism and Marketing are closely linked, a second major in Marketing would enhance and be easy to integrate with the knowledge from my Tourism and Events modules.

As lessons are conducted in the evening, I do not have to worry about missing classes because of my day job. The lecturers are also very understanding of our work commitments. All of this has made my part-time academic journey with Murdoch easier and more enjoyable.

I would recommend Murdoch University to others because of the prestige and recognition of the University’s Degree programmes and certifications, and the flexibility and understanding provided by the University and staff. In addition, the curriculum is constantly being reviewed and updated to ensure that students gain the latest, most relevant knowledge in their respective majors or fields, and I have genuinely enjoyed my academic journey with Murdoch.

I would also recommend the Double Major Degrees with the University, as they are planned such that anyone will be able to cope with the workload. Moreover, they give students an advantage over their single major peers when it comes to career prospects and progression.
