I had previously attained a Diploma in Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Through that, I gained direct entry into the 2nd year of my Degree programme with Murdoch University in 2019 and expect to graduate in 2021.

I chose to study with Murdoch University as it has reputable alumni in the fields I hope to join upon graduation. Besides, many companies do acknowledge graduates from the University, where the modules offered in its Degree programmes focus on practicality, with insights into the industry. Murdoch University’s flexible study schedule and the way it encourages independent learning suit me better, given the limited time I have juggling different commitments.

Additionally, I am the current President of the Murdoch Singapore-Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS) Student Chapter. All students who take Public Relations (now referred to as Strategic Communication) Degrees will receive a one-year membership to the IPRS Student Chapter upon graduation. Personally, being in the committee has given me great networking opportunities and strengthened my leadership skills. I can look back proudly on these experiences as I advance in my career. As such, it has been one of my biggest takeaways from the programme.

Murdoch University is competitive in terms of Degree recognition, educational experience, modules and double major options offered, and affordability and I would recommend the University to students and working professionals.

Being a go-getter in life, I was determined to stay relevant and improve my skills and career prospects by pursuing my passion in Human Resource Management and Criminology. However, these ambitions would often be postponed to focus on other life commitments, and there was no institution that provided my preferred Degree.

It was the perfect opportunity to study what I was interested in and distinguish myself competitively with double specialisms.

My decision to study Psychology and Human Resource Management was influenced during my days serving National Service. I was posted to a manpower department within an army unit and exposed to the nature and workings of human resources. I learnt how every process, framework and system contributed to the overall HR strategy and ultimately, the goals of the unit. This sparked my interest in wanting to learn more about Human Resources.

I decided on a Double Major Degree in Psychology and Human Resource Management with Murdoch University as it is an internationally recognised University. My choice of this Double Major not only combined both my interests, I believe it will offer wider career prospects and give me the competitive advantage for my future career. For the same reason, I would recommend others to take this up as well.

Through its partnership with Kaplan in Singapore, Murdoch University offers an accelerated university education that provides the same Degree qualification as its Australia campus. This programme can be completed in a shorter timeframe of 2 years instead of the usual 3 to 4 years at other universities. Therefore, I believe it is a suitable choice for students aiming for career progression.

In terms of learning, the lecturers were open to discussions and feedback about their teaching and encouraged discussions and participations during the lectures to ensure we were engaged. They were also helpful and patient in giving advice when we faced issues with assignments. There were even instances when lecturers would sacrifice their free time during breaks or after classes to ensure we understood the module.

Murdoch University was my choice for postgraduate studies, as the school would provide me with a globally-recognised credential and an enriching university experience.

I decided to pursue this Master’s programme as I have a strong interest in Data Science. It deals with huge volumes of data and uses modern tools and techniques to uncover unseen patterns, derive meaningful insights, and make operational decisions. The programme curriculum is very structured, and its relevance to my current job scope has helped me to add value to my work.

The University provides excellent student support with its online platform, where relevant resources are easily available. For example, I can access the online Murdoch University Library anytime to look up journals and articles for my research. The unit coordinators are also easily contactable via email, should one have any queries on the modules.

Studying at Kaplan also provides me with a flexible study schedule, which is important as I am working full-time. These positive factors were what gave me the confidence to embark on the programme. Undertaking part-time post-graduate studies while juggling with full-time work and family life is no walk in the park. Ever since embarking on this programme, I have become more disciplined and effective in managing my time.

What drove me to pursue a Postgraduate Degree was the desire to remain competitive in the market, to upgrade myself, and for career progression. To me, an educational qualification is a form of personal development. While different from a professional accreditation (which would be relevant to my field of work), I see this as advantageous to have on my resume, as it is an accomplishment and reflects positively on one’s attitude to learn and advance.

As my role is a corporate function, the knowledge I gained during the programme is useful to my work. When speaking with commercial partners, I can understand and relate to them, and am able to provide feasible solutions. The programme has also helped me to develop my strategic thinking.

It was a good experience being back in a classroom setting (whether online or in-person), learning alongside students from different backgrounds but with the same motivations and objectives. I heard about and learned from their experiences and gained different perspectives on the best way to perform my work duties. I also had a great time working with different teammates – we supported each other to get the work done.

While previously working as a Physician Lead in a large medical group, I was determined to diversify my career. Instead of limiting myself to a purely clinical role, I wanted to expand my role into one that involves other facets of the Healthcare industry. Hence, I decided to take on the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Murdoch University.

Not only did this MBA provide me with knowledge about the commercial aspects of the Medicine and Healthcare industry, but it has also given me the confidence to present well and speak with conviction for a more effective pitch of my ideas. While the MBA is just the beginning of my journey to career progression, it has given me the skills to make the right connections.

After attaining my Master’s Degree, I received job offers from other clinic groups who are recruiting for a Physician Lead and Medical Director position. Eventually, I managed to secure a leadership role in Medical Affairs in a pharmaceutical company, which had been my long-term goal.

I have advanced my career in the medical industry over the past 16 years, working in both regional and local subsidiary roles, and in different functions. Through my experiences, I felt compelled to enhance my knowledge. A Master of Business Administration programme would enable me to do so as it allows one to learn beyond their own trades, with the lecturers educating us about the challenges faced by other industries.

Seeking to expand my horizons, I decided to study this programme with Murdoch University. My responsibilities as a working parent of two meant that Murdoch’s flexible study schedules were necessary for my education, allowing me to balance my time spent on work, study and family.

The quality of the education itself was ensured by the experienced and knowledgeable lecturers, and their vast knowledge regarding sustainability, global business and leadership has influenced my thinking and values. Overall, the programme has made me rethink the concept of leadership, taught me to refocus on people, as well as helped me understand the importance of financial planning in business. I’ve learnt how to engage others and lead a team as well, and this information has supported me in my job. My exchanges with participants across various industries have also provided me a fresh perspective on business strategies to succeed in the market.

Upon completing the programme, I was able to secure my current job with Alcon Singapore. I believe Murdoch University offers an industry-relevant education, and its specially selected lecturers ensure the quality of its students’ learning.

I decided to further my studies as I believe that formal education is required to understand managing a company. Through a great consultation provided by Kaplan, I chose Murdoch University as they offer a lot of learning support, and I felt more confident studying with them to achieve my educational goals.

I opted for a Double Major Degree as I believe doing so opens more career paths and would improve my job prospects. I selected the Banking and Finance specialisations as I often work with banks and other financial institutions and knowing how they operate helped me understand my clients better. Studying this Degree has introduced me to various financial concepts such as budgeting and financial analysis.

As a part-time student, Murdoch University made studying easy for me. Lessons were evenly spread across alternate weeks and I had the flexibility to choose when I wanted my lesson to be. This ensured that I could plan my work schedule in advance to avoid clashes. If I needed support, the Student Support team always responded quickly to resolve any situation.

I feel that the lecturers are professional, sharing their work experience as a reference for us on several subjects. I truly appreciate their time spent helping me on many occasions and going out of their way to answer my queries even after lessons.

Taking a Double Major Degree is what I recommend. It strongly enhances your employability potential, makes it easier to get a job after graduating and provides you a competitive advantage through showcasing your competency in two different fields.

I have recommended quite a few of my friends and colleagues to study with Murdoch. With its flexible study schedules for part-time students, experienced lecturers and recognised accreditation, I could not ask for more.
